Agnew, Cornelius Rea

[15] Agnew, Cornelius Rea, geb. zu New-York 8. Aug. 1830, studierte seit 1849 am Coll. of Phys. and Surg., an dem er 1852 promovierte, fungierte bis 1853 als House Surg. am New-York Hosp., praktizierte bis 1854 in einem kleinen Orte in der Gegend des Portage Lake und liess sich darauf in New-York, seinem jetzigen Wohnorte, nieder, nachdem er noch bis 1855 in Europa, speziell in Dublin, London und Paris weitere Studien gemacht hatte. 1858 wurde er zum Surg.-General des Staates New-York vom Gouverneur ernannt, fungierte bis 1864 zugleich als Surgeon an der N. Y. Eye and Ear Infirmary, war im amerikan. Bürgerkriege in verschiedenen Stellungen bei der Armee thätig und führte verschiedene Neuerungen in den Feldlazarett-Einrichtungen ein (Pavillonsystem etc.), richtete 1866 im Coll, of Phys. and Surg. eine Augenklinik ein und wurde 1869 klin. Prof. für Augen- und Ohrenkrankheiten, in welcher Stellung er noch 1878 thätig war. 1868 gründete er das Brooklyn Eye and Ear Hosp. und 1869 das Manhattan Eye and Ear Hosp. in New-York. Er publizierte u. A.: »A contribution to the surgery of divergent squint« – »Ophthalmic notes: 1. Trephining the cornea to remove a foreign body; 2. A case of double, extremely minute and apparently congenital lachrymal fistula; 3. A contribution to the statistics of cataract extraction of 118 recent cases« (New-York 1874) – »Canthoplasty as a remedy in certain diseases of the eye« (Ib. 1875) – »Clinical contribution to ophthalmology« (Arch. of ophthalm. and otology, Ib. 1875).
