[244] Briggs, William Thompson, als Sohn von Dr. John B. zu Bowling Green, Ky., 4. Dez. 1828 geb., studierte und promovierte 1849 an der Transsylvania-Univers., praktizierte anfangs in seiner Vaterstadt und liess sich 1851 in Nashville, Tenn., nieder, woselbst er seit 1877 als Prof. der Chir. an der Univers. thätig war; auch fungierte er in gleicher Stellung an der Vanderbilt Univers. of Tenn. und war vorher successive anat. Prosektor an der Univers. von Nashville, Adjunkt-Prof. der Anat., Prof. der Physiol. und Geburtsh. bis 1877. Er war 1872 Präsident der Amer. Med. Assoc. Von seinen wichtigsten Publikationen zitieren wir: »History of surgery in Middle Tennessee« – »Enchondromatous tumors of the hand, forearm and arm« (Nashville Journ. of Med. and Surg., 1871) – »Traumatic aneurism of the internal carotis, the result of a puncture, ligation of the common carotid and then of the internal, at the seat of injury« (Ib.) – »Escape of catheter into the bladder during its use for the relief of retention« (Ib.) – »Dislocation of the radius and ulna backwards in a patient two and a half years old« (Ib.) – »Multilocular ovarian tumor .... weight of tumor eighty-five pounds, recovery« (Ib.[244] 1872) – »The trephine, its uses in injuries of the head« (Ib. 1876) etc. B. starb 13.
