[506] Finlayson, James, in Glasgow, daselbst geb. und hauptsächlich unter Lister und Gairdner ausgebildet, L. R. C. S. Edinb. 1867, M. B. 1867 u. M. D. Glasgow 1869, L. L. D. Glasgow 1899, war 1 ¹/₂ Jahre lang Resident am Clinical Hospital for Children in Manchester, nach beendigter Ausbildung Jahre lang Physician und Lehrer der klin. Med. am Glasgow Western Infirmary, Consulting[506] Physician am Kgl. Hospital für kranke Kinder in Glasgow. Schriften: »On the normal temperature in children« (Glasgow med. Journ. 1869) – »On the hours of maximum mortality in acute and chronic diseases« (Ib. 1874) – »Daily periodicity in the vital functions of man« (Proc. of the phil. soc. Glasgow 1873 bis 74); dazu zahlreiche klinische Beiträge im Glasgow Med. Journal, Brit. Med. Journ., Archives of Pediatrics, das Kapitel »Diagnosis« für Keating's »Cyclopedia of the diseases of children« (1889), ferner: »Clinical manual for the study of medical cases« (1878, 1886, 1891). Ausserdem publizierte F. viele Vorträge über geschichtliche Med., die er in seiner Eigenschaft als Bibliothekar der med. Fakultät seit 25 Jahren zu halten Veranlassung hatte, u.a.: »Ancient Egyptian Medicine« (Br. M. J. 1893) – »Herophilus and Erasistratus« (Glasg. Med. J. 1893) – »Celsus« (Ib. 1892) – »Galen, two bibliographical demonstrations« (Glasgow 1895) – »Eponymic structures in human anatomy« (Glasgow M. J. 1895) – »A series of papers on the dangers of dentition« (Obst. J. Lond. 1873, worin eine histor. Skizze zur Doktrin der Dentition gegeben ist) – »A paper on the eare of infants etc. according to the Bible and Talmud« (Med. Mag. 1893). Erwähnenswert sind ferner zwei kleine Monographien: »Account of the life and books of maistre Peter Lowe, the founder of the faculty of Ph. a. S.« (Glasgow 1889) – »Account etc. of Dr. Robert Watt, author[507] of the Biblioth. Britannica« (Lond. 1897), Aufsätze über Rob. Houston in Glasgow, den ersten Ovariotomisten daselbst (Janus 1896) und über John Hunter (Br. M. J. 1890, 1893). Auch gab P. John Meyes' Abhandlung »Medicine and kindred arts in the Plays of Shakespeare« (Glasgow 1896) heraus.
