[1809] Walshe, Walter Hayle, zu London, geb. zu Dublin 1812, studierte in Paris zunächst oriental. Sprachen, seit 1832 auch Med., wurde 1834 mit Louis bekannt und von diesem nachhaltig beeinflusst, ging dann nach Edinburg, wo er 1836 promoviert wurde, begann 1838 seine Praxis als Physic. in London, wurde 1852 Fellow des Roy. Coll. of Phys., war 1841 bis 49 Prof. der pathol. Anat., sodann der klin. Med. am University Coll. und wurde 1862 emeritiert; er war ausserdem Consult. Physic. des Univ. Coll. Hosp., des Consumption Hosp. in Brompton und des Victoria-Hosp. für Kinder. W., der 14. Dez. 1892 starb, gehörte zu den ausgezeichnetsten Klinikern, die England je gehabt hat. Seit 1839 entfaltete er eine hervorragende schriftstellerische Thätigkeit. Die wichtigsten Schriften von W. sind: »Physical diagnosis of diseases of the lungs« (1843) – »The nature and treatment of cancer« (1846); der Artikel »Products, adventitious« (Cyclop. of Anat. and Physiol., 1848), der Bericht: »On phthisis« (Brit. and For. Med.-Chir. Rev., 1849) – »On the logical application of physiology to pathology« (1849) – »Pract. treatise on diseases of the lungs« (4. ed. 1871) – »Pract. treatise on diseases of the heart« (4. ed. 1873) – »Dramatic singing physiologically estimated« (1881); ausserdem an Aufsätzen: »On human progress« (Med.
