[481] May (spr. mē), Sir Thomas Erskine, Lord Farnborough, engl. Geschichtschreiber, geb. 1815, gest. 17. Mai 1886, trat 1831 beim Unterhaus als Bibliotheksassistent ein und avancierte allmählich bis zum Clerk (obersten Beamten des Hauses), welche Stelle er 1871 erhielt, nachdem er schon 1866 zum Ritter ernannt worden war. Im April 1886 trat er in den Ruhestand, ward 10. Mai zum Peer und Lord Farnborough ernannt, starb aber schon eine Woche später. Er schrieb: »A treatise on the law, privileges, proceedings and usage of Parliament« (1844; 10. Aufl. von R. Palgrave und Bonham-Carter, 1893; deutsch bearbeitet von Oppenheim, 3. Aufl., Leipz. 1888); »Remarks and suggestions with a view to facilitate the dispatch of public business in Parliament« (1849); »Rules, orders and forms of proceeding of the House of Commons« (in dessen Auftrag gedruckt, 1854); »Democracy in Europe« (1877, 2 Bde.) und sein Hauptwerk: »The constitutional history of England since the accession of Georg 111. 1760–1860« (1861–63, 2 Bde.; 4.
