[227] Sclater (spr. ßklēter), Philipp Lutley, Zoolog, geb. 4. Nov. 1829, studierte in Oxford die Rechte, fungierte seit 1855 an Lincoln's Inn, ward 1859 Sekretär der Londoner Zoological Society und gilt als der bedeutendste Systematiker der Wirbeltiere, besonders der Vögel. Er veröffentlichte: »Catalogue of American birds« (Lond. 1862), »Zoological sketches« (das. 1861–62, 2 Bde.), »Jacamars and puffbirds« (»Galbulidae and Buconidae«, das. 1880), »Guide to the gardens of the Zoological Society of London« und redigierte die erste Serie der »Ibis« sowie die »Natural History Review«. 1877–82 war er Generalsekretär der British Association for the Advancement of Science.
