Jan. 1823 in Usk (Monmouthshire), bereiste 1848-52 Brasilien, 1854-62 den Malaiischen Archipel, entwarf unabhängig von Darwin eine Evolutionstheorie in der Abhandlung »On the tendencies of varieties to depart indefinitely from the original type«, auch verdient um schärfere Gruppierung auf dem Gebiete der Tiergeographie durch »On the geographical distribution of animals« (2 Bde., 1876; deutsch von Meyer, 1876), schrieb außer seinen Reisewerken; »Contributions to the theory of natural selection« (1870; deutsch 1870), »Tropical nature« (1878; deutsch 1879), »Island life« (1880), »Darwinism« (1889; deutsch 1891) etc. und »My life. Records of events and opinions« (2 Bde., 1905). W. versuchte den Spiritismus wissenschaftlich zu begründen (»On miracles and modern spiritualism«, 1875). – Vgl. Smith und W. Wallace (1904).
