[756] Paulding (spr. Pahlding), James Kirke, geb. 22. August. 1779 zu Pleasant-Valley im Staate New York, vermuthlich holländischer Abkunft, lebte später in New York, verband sich mit Washington Irving u. gab mit demselben seit 1807 die satyrische Zeitschrift Salmagundi heraus; er war 1614, nach Beendigung des Krieges, kurze Zeit Secretär im Marineausschuß zu Washington u. dann viele Jahre Regierungsagent für die Marine in New York; unter der Administration Van Burens war er von 1837–41 Marineminister; dann zog er sich von dem öffentlichen Leben zurück u. st. 9. April 1860 zu Hyde-Park im Staate New York.
