[1843] West, Charles, zu London, im Winter in Nizza, geb. 8. Aug. 1816, studierte im St. Barthol. Hosp., wurde 1837 in Berlin Dr., 1842 Lic., 1848 Fellow des Roy. Coll. of Physic., war 1863, 65, 70 Censor bei demselben, war Physic. des Kinder-Hosp. in Great Ormond-Street, Physic. Accouch. und Dozent der Geburtsh. am St. Barthol. und Middlesex Hosp., Präsident der Roy. Med.-Chir. und der Obstetric. Soc. W., der 19. März 1898 in Paris starb, ist besonders bekannt durch seine: »Lectures on diseases of infancy and childhood« (6. ed. 1873; deutsch bearb. von A. Wegner, Berlin 1853; 5. Aufl. herausg. von E. Henoch, 1872). Ausserdem veröffentlichte er: »An inquiry into the pathological importance of ulceration of the os uteri« (die Croonian Lectures für 1854) – »Lectures on the diseases of women« (4. ed. 1879; deutsch von W. Langenbeck, Göttingen 1860; 3. Aufl. 1870) – »On some disorders of the nervous system in childhood« (Lumleian Lectures, 1871) – »Harvey and his times« (Harveian Oration, 1874) – »On hospital organization« (1877) – »Medical women« (1878); auch übersetzte er Baréty's »Nice and its climate« (1882).
