Dec. 1812 zu Kelso in Schottland, studirte in Edinburg u. dann in Haileybury Orientalische Sprachen, wurde zuerst Lehrer derselben an der Naval and Military Academy in Edinburg, ging nachher nach Ostindien, wurde 1845 Vorstand des Government College in Benares u. 1856 zugleich Professor der Moralphilosophie; 1861 kehrte er nach Europa zurück, wurde Bibliothekar des Indienhauses in London u. st. 16. Febr. 1864. Er hat sich bes. um das Studium der indischen Sprachen u.
