Juni 1840 in Abercareo bei Pomerwyd in Wales, studierte in Bangor und Oxford, später in Göttingen und Leipzig und wurde dann Schulinspektor in seiner Heimat, von wo er 1878 als Professor der keltischen Sprachen nach Oxford berufen wurde.
