[865] Schlich, William, Forstmann, geb. 28. Febr. 1840 zu Flonheim in Rheinhessen, trat 1862 in hessischen und 1866 in englisch-ostindischen Forstdienst, wurde 1881 Generalinspektor der Wälder in Indien und 1885 Professor und Direktor der forstlichen Abteilung der englisch-indischen Polytechnischen Schule zu Coopers Hill in England. Er schrieb: »Manual of forestry« (Lond. 1889–95, 3 Bde.; Bd. 1 in 2. Aufl. 1897; Bd. 2 u. 3 in 3. Aufl. 1904; Bd. 4: »Forest protection« und Bd. 5: »Forest utilisation«, 1897, sind Bearbeitungen von Heß' »Forstschutz« und Gayers »Forstbenutzung«, durch W. R. Fischer); »Afforestation in Great Britain and Ireland« (Dubl. 1886); »Forestry in the colonies and in India« (in den »Proceedings of the Royal Colonial Institute of London«, 1890); »Forestry in the United Kingdom« (1904); auch redigierte er 1875–79 die von ihm gegründete erste indische Forstzeitung: »The Indian Forester«.
