[263] Seeley (spr. ßīli), Sir John Robert, engl. Schriftsteller, geb. 1834 in London, gest. 14. Jan. 1895 in Cambridge, studierte in Cambridge, wurde 1863 Professor des Lateinischen am University College in London und 1869 Professor der neuern Geschichte in Cambridge. Sein Hauptwerk ist das zuerst anonym in vielen Auflagen erschienene freireligiöse Buch: »Ecce homo: a survey of the life and work of Jesus Christ« (1865, zuletzt 1904). Außerdem erschienen von ihm: »Lectures and essays« (1870 u. 1895); »Life and times of Stein« (1878, 3 Bde.; deutsch, Gotha 1883 bis 1887, 3 Bde.); »Natural religion« (1882, neue Ausg. 1895); »The expansion of England« (1883, neue Ausg. 1895); »Goethe reviewed after sixty years« (1894); »The growth of British policy« (1895, 2 Bde.); »Introduction to political science« (1896) und »Ethics and religion« (1900).
