[223] London and South Western Railway (966 englische Meilen = 1554 km), eine der größten Eisenbahnunternehmungen Englands, mit dem Sitz in London, 1834 unter dem Namen London and Southampton Railway gegründet, den sie bis 1839 behielt. Die L. erweiterte ihr Netz größtenteils durch Bau, teilweise auch durch Fusion und Ankauf fremder Linien.
Die Hauptlinie geht von der Waterloo-Station in London aus und spaltet sich in Zweiglinien nach Portsmouth, Southampton, Bournemouth, Plymouth und Nord-Cornwall. Von Bedeutung ist der Festlandsverkehr über Southampton nach St. Malo (Frankreich).
Das aufgewendete Anlagekapital betrug Ende 1912 rd. 56∙5 Mill. ₤ (1152∙6 Mill. M.). Die Betriebseinnahmen beliefen sich auf 5∙8 Mill. ₤ (118∙3 Mill. M.); denen 3∙8 Mill. ₤ (77∙5 Mill. M.) Betriebsausgaben gegenüberstanden. Der Betriebskoeffizient betrug 66%.
