[640] Humphreys (spr. hömmfris), Henry Noel, engl. Schriftsteller und Illustrator, geb. 4. Jan. 1810 in Birmingham, gest. 10. Juni 1879, ward z. T. auf dem Kontinent ausgebildet und veröffentlichte 1840, nach längerm Aufenthalt in Rom, sein erstes Werk, die Beschreibung zu Cookes »Views in Rome«. Diesem folgten dann zahlreiche andre Bilderwerke, namentlich: »British butterflies« (mit Westwood, 1841); »British moths« (1843–45, 2 Bde.); »The illuminated books of the middle ages« (1844–49); »Ancient coins and medals« (1850); »The coin collector's manual« (1853, 2 Bde.); »The coinage of the British empire« (1854); »Stories by an archaeologist and his friends« (1856); »Ocean gardens« (1857); »The butterfly vivarium or insect-home« (1858); »Goethe in Strasbourg« (dramatische Novellette, 1860); »History of the art of printing« (1867); »Holbein and the Dance of death« (1868); »Masterpieces of the early painters and engravers« (1869); »Rembrandt and his etchings« (1871).
