Juni 1892, studierte in Edinburg, wurde 1848 Prosektor in Glasgow, 1855 pathologischer Anatom in Scutari, 1860 Professor an der Army Medical School. Er führte das Thermometer in die englische Praxis ein und schrieb: »Handbook of science and practice of medicine« (1858, 7. Aufl. 1890); »The growth of the recruit and young soldier« (2. Aufl. 1887); »On the doctrine of evolution in its application to pathology« (im »Glasgow Medical Journal«, 1885–1886); »On the animal alcaloids« (2. Aufl. 1889).
