[283] Alcock (spr. aol-), Sir Rutherford, engl. Diplomat und Orientalist, geb. 1809, gest. 2. Nov. 1897, studierte Medizin, war 1832–37 Arzt bei dem englischen Hilfskorps in Portugal und Spanien und seit 1844 Konsul in chinesischen Handelsplätzen. 1858 wurde er zum Generalkonsul, 1859 zum bevollmächtigten Minister in Japan ernannt; 1865–71 war er Gesandter in Peking. Er schrieb: »Notes on the medical history and statistics of the British legion of Spain« (1838); »Elements of Japanese grammar« (1861); »Familiar dialogues in Japanese, etc.« (1863); »The capital of the Tycoon: a narrative ot three years' residence in Japan« (1863, 2 Bde.), eins der besten Werke über japanische Zustände, und »Art and art-industries in Japan« (1878).
