Jan. 1901, studierte in Oxford, wurde 1866 Lehrer der Geschichte daselbst, 1875 Pfarrer in Embleton in Northumberland, 1879 Dekan in Alnwick, 1882 Kanonikus von Newcastle, 1884 Professor der Kirchengeschichte in Cambridge, 1891 Bischof von Peterborough und 1897 Bischof von London. Er schrieb unter anderm: »Primes of roman history« (Lond. 1875); »The age of Elisabeth« (1876); »The life of Simon de Montfort« (1876); »The Tudors and the Reformation« (1876); »Primes of English history« (1877); »History of the papacy during the period of the Reformation« (1882–94, 5 Bde.); »Life of Cardinal Wolsey« (1888); »Carlisle« (in den »Historic towns«, 1889); »Queen Elizabeth« (1896). Von 1886–91 redigierte er die Zeitschrift »English Historical Review«. Nach seinem Tod erschienen: »Historical essays and reviews« (1902) u. »Thoughts on education« (Vorträge, 1902).
