[570] Rafinesque-Schmaltz (spr. rafinésk-), Constantine Samuel, Botaniker und Zoolog, geb. 1784 in Galacz, gest. 18. Sept. 1842 in Philadelphia, kam!802 nach Philadelphia, machte große botanische Exkursionen durch Pennsylvanien und Delaware, lebte von 1805–15 in Sizilien und wurde 1818 Professor in Lexington (Kentucky). Er schrieb: »Medical flora or Manual of the medical botany of the United [570] States« (Philad. 1828–30, 2 Bde.); »New Flora and botany of North America« (das. 1836, 4 Bde.); »Flora telluriana« (das. 1836–38, 4 Bde.); »Sylva telluriana« (das. 1838); »Alsographia americana« (das. 1838). Seine »Complete writings on recent and fossil conchology« erschienen Philadelphia 1864. Auch arbeitete er über Fische und Mollusken.
