[653] Sayce (spr. ßëß), Archibald Henry, engl. Orientalist und Sprachforscher, geb. 25. Sept. 1846 in Stirehampton (Wales), studierte in Oxford und wurde 1869 zum Fellow von Queen's College daselbst, 1876 zum Professor der vergleichenden Sprachwissenschaft ernannt, legte aber später diese Stelle nieder und lebt seitdem teils in England, teils in Ägypten. Seine Hauptarbeiten beziehen sich auf die Keilinschriften. Von der Sprache der akkadischen Keilschriften lieferte er die erste Grammatik 1870 im »Journal of Philology«. Von seinen zahlreichen andern orientalistischen Werken seien genannt: »Assyrian grammar for comparative purposes« (Lond. 1872); »Elementary Assyrian grammar« (1875, 3.
