[299] Proteus (Mythologie), ein Meergott, der weissagen und sich in alle Gestalten verwandeln konnte. Selten nur stieg er aus den Meerestiefen und sonnte sich am Strande neben Poseidon's Robben. Früher war er ein König; aber die Tücke seiner Söhne, Telegonos und Polygonos, veranlaßte ihn hinabzusteigen in das Meer und Neptun's Robben zu hüten. Seine Tochter war die Mutter der [299] Kabiren. Wer seine Weissagungen erfahren wollte, mußte mit ihm ringen und ihn besiegen. Ost wird sein Name gebraucht, um einen Menschen mit räthselvollem und unbestimmtem Charakter, oder auch mit auffallender Vielseitigkeit des Geistes zu bezeichnen.
